Biscayne National Park

Biscayne is the Everglades' lesser-known neighbour and, for many visitors, the more accessible one. Boat tours from Convoy Point head out to the reef for snorkelling, glass-bottom-boat viewing, and trips to Boca Chita Key with its ornamental lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in the 1930s by the millionaire Mark Honeywell, who used the key as a private retreat.

For a quieter experience, kayak the mangrove shoreline at sunrise from the launch ramp at Convoy Point. The visitor centre at the end of Canal Drive has exhibits on reef biology and the park's history of shipwrecks; it makes a useful primer before you head out on the water.

A story
Ninety-five percent of the park is underwater. It protects the longest stretch of mangrove forest on Florida's east coast, the northernmost living coral reefs in the continental United States, and a chain of small offshore keys. The Dante Fascell Visitor Center is the only land-based access point.
