Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge protects a broad sweep of marsh, oak hammock, cypress, cedar, and seagrass between Homosassa and the Chassahowitzka River. It was created as a waterfowl sanctuary and remains important habitat for manatees, wading birds, turtles, otters, and other Gulf Coast wildlife.
The refuge is best experienced from the water or from quiet edges rather than as a single visitor-centre stop. Bring patience, insect protection, and a willingness to let the landscape reveal itself slowly.
