Palatka sits at the eastern edge of the Ocala National Forest, a vast longleaf pine and scrub oak forest that contains the world's largest concentration of sand pine scrub and some of Florida's finest freshwater springs. The main spring-fed swimming areas — Silver Glen, Salt Springs, and Alexander Springs — are a short drive west and south of Palatka, each with water that maintains a constant 68°F year-round, crystal clear, and fringed by ancient cypress.
Alexander Springs is the most scenic, with a deep blue boil surrounded by subtropical forest and a short canoe trail through spring-run wetlands. Silver Glen Springs opens into Lake George, the second-largest lake in Florida, and is good for swimming and snorkelling (manatees visit in cooler months). Salt Springs is smaller and less crowded on weekdays. Camping is available at each site, operated by the US Forest Service. Canoe and kayak rentals are available at Alexander and Silver Glen.
