February and March are the most popular time to visit Palatka. The azaleas in Ravine Gardens are in bloom, temperatures are comfortable (16–24°C), and the Florida Azalea Festival — the longest-running festival in the state, held annually since 1938 — takes place on the first weekend of March. The St. Johns River is alive with bass fishing activity in early spring.
October through January is also pleasant: mild weather, good birding on the river (wading birds, osprey, bald eagles are all visible from the waterfront), and the springs in Ocala National Forest are at their most appealing when the air is cool and the 68°F spring water feels warmer than it is.
Summer (June–September) is hot and humid, with daily thunderstorms and temperatures regularly above 35°C. The springs are crowded on weekends. Palatka is not a resort town, so accommodation doesn't fully book out, but the heat makes outdoor exploration uncomfortable in the middle of the day.
