Siesta Key Beach

Consistently ranked among America's best beaches — pure white quartz sand

Siesta Key is the main beach and the reason most visitors come to Sarasota. The sand is so white and fine it squeaks underfoot, and the Gulf water is calm, clear, and bath-warm from May through October. The beach is wide — wide enough that even on a crowded winter weekend you can find a quiet patch. A concession stand, restrooms, and a volleyball area occupy the main public beach; the calmer stretch further south at Crescent Beach is better for families and anyone wanting less noise.

Parking fills early on weekends and throughout the tourist season — arrive before 10am or use the free shuttle from the mainland. The village at the north end of the key has a cluster of restaurants and bars worth visiting before or after the beach.

A story
The sand at Siesta Key is not ordinary beach sand — it is almost pure quartz crystal, ground smooth by thousands of years of wave action. Quartz reflects rather than absorbs heat, which is why the sand stays cool underfoot even in the middle of a Florida summer afternoon. The beach has repeatedly placed first in national rankings, including Dr. Beach's annual list, and the scientific explanation for why it feels different is something first-time visitors notice immediately.
