Kayaking the Mangrove Channels

Paddle through quiet mangrove tunnels at Fort De Soto and along the Pinellas coast

The mangrove channels around Fort De Soto Park and along the Pinellas bayshore are some of the best flatwater paddling in Florida. The water is shallow, calm, and clear enough to watch manatees and rays pass beneath the kayak. Great blue herons, roseate spoonbills, and ospreys are common; in winter, manatees use the warm shallows as a refuge.

Several outfitters rent sit-on-top kayaks and stand-up paddleboards by the hour near Fort De Soto and along the Weedon Island Preserve to the north. No previous kayaking experience is required — the channels are sheltered from wind and the currents are negligible.

The best time to go is early morning, both for the wildlife and to avoid the afternoon heat. Bring water, sunscreen, and a waterproof bag for your phone. The launch at Fort De Soto's North Beach gives the easiest access to the mangrove network.
