J.C. Newman Cigar Factory

El Reloj — the Clock — is the last working cigar factory in Ybor, housed in a red-brick building with a four-faced clock tower that has been the neighbourhood's most prominent landmark since 1910. Self-guided tours run during weekdays and include the rolling floor, where workers still make cigars by hand using the same equipment used a century ago.

The museum on the upper floor traces the industry from its mechanised heyday — 700 million cigars a year at peak — through the Depression, the loss of the Cuban tobacco supply after 1962, and the near-total collapse. A small shop sells house-rolled cigars and lets visitors try rolling one themselves under supervision.

A story
The Newman family bought the building in 1954 for the bargain price of one dollar. Ybor's cigar industry was collapsing, and the city was desperate to keep a manufacturer in town.
