Chain of Lakes

The Winter Haven Chain of Lakes is a network of 24 lakes connected by canals, giving the city its distinctive character — water appears at the end of nearly every street, and the lakefronts have parks, boat ramps, and fishing piers. Boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing are the main activities; bass fishing in particular is popular year-round, and the chain has produced some notable catches.

The Chain of Lakes Trail is a 4.7-mile paved multi-use path running along several of the connected lakes, suitable for cycling and walking. It links some of the prettier lakefront parks and gives a good sense of how the city wraps around its water. Kayak and canoe rentals are available at several points along the chain.

A story
Winter Haven's 24 interconnected lakes are linked by canals built in the 1920s during Florida's land boom, when developers envisioned a canal-based city where residents would travel by boat between their homes, shops, and clubs. The dream faded with the bust, but the canals survived and still allow a boat to pass through the middle of the city from lake to lake. The chain covers about 2,500 acres of water in total.
