Chehaw Park is a sprawling 800-acre city park about 5 km north of downtown Albany, best known for the Wild Animal Park within it. The animal park was designed by Jim Fowler, the naturalist familiar from television's Wild Kingdom, and its enclosures are set within a natural hardwood habitat rather than the concrete-and-glass structures typical of urban zoos.
The park holds bison, elk, alligators, African plains animals, and a variety of birds in an open, walk-through setting. The wider park has a campground, walking and mountain biking trails, a BMX track, and picnic areas along the Muckalee Creek. It's the kind of place that Albanians take for granted but visitors are often pleasantly surprised by — a genuinely good wild animal park attached to a well-maintained greenspace, all within minutes of the city center.
