A.H. Stephens State Park preserves Liberty Hall, the Greek Revival home of Alexander H. Stephens, who served as Vice President of the Confederate States of America. The house is open for guided tours and gives a remarkably intact picture of antebellum Georgia life — the furnishings are original, the rooms are small, and the effect is intimate rather than grandiose.
The adjacent Confederate Museum covers Stephens' political life in unusual depth, acknowledging both his anti-secession position and his role in the Confederacy, as well as his post-war career as Governor of Georgia. Beyond the historic structures, the park has a fishing lake, group campsites, and several miles of wooded hiking trails that are pleasant in the cooler months. The park is the primary reason most visitors make the detour to Crawfordville.
