Allerton and McBryde Gardens

Two adjacent botanical gardens operated by the National Tropical Botanical Garden make up one of the finest plant collections in the Pacific. McBryde Garden is the larger research garden, accessible by self-guided tour, with an enormous collection of palms, Hawaiian native species, and rare tropical plants including many endangered species. Allerton Garden, immediately to the south, was developed as a private estate garden by the Allerton family in the 1930s-70s and is only accessible on a guided tour — the tour is well worth taking.

Allerton is the more dramatic of the two: the garden is laid out along a stream valley that opens to the sea, and the Allertons created a series of outdoor rooms with pools, fountains, and spectacular specimen trees, including the enormous Moreton Bay figs whose roots were famously used as a backdrop in the original Jurassic Park. The guided tours run several times daily; book well in advance, particularly in peak season, as places fill up.
