Schweitzer is the mountain half of Sandpoint's appeal. In winter it is a serious ski area above the lake; in summer the same slopes turn to mountain biking, hiking, huckleberry picking, and chairlift views over Lake Pend Oreille and the surrounding ranges.
The resort is a drive up from town rather than part of downtown Sandpoint, but it belongs on the same page because the two places feed each other. Sandpoint gives Schweitzer a real town below the mountain, and Schweitzer gives Sandpoint a year-round outdoor draw.
