Sandpoint is the rare small American resort town where the setting does most of the selling and the town still has a centre. It sits on Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho's largest lake, with the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains close enough to make downtown feel tucked into the landscape.
The water is the first reason to come. Sandpoint City Beach puts swimming, lake views, and a broad public shoreline within a short walk of downtown. In winter, and increasingly in summer, Schweitzer pulls travellers up the mountain for skiing, biking, hiking, and big views back over the lake.
Sandpoint also has more cultural life than its size suggests. The restored Panida Theater anchors the old downtown, and the Bonner County History Museum gives useful context for a region shaped by railroads, timber, Indigenous homelands, and lake travel.
