Weiser River Trail

The Weiser River Trail is a rail-trail following the old Pacific & Idaho Northern Railway corridor north from Weiser along the Weiser River. The full trail runs about 84 kilometres to New Meadows, but even a few miles from town on foot or by bike gives you a good sense of the high desert river valley — cottonwoods along the water, sagebrush on the hillsides, and the river making its way through a landscape that feels largely unchanged.

The section closest to town is flat and easy. Bring water in summer — there's no shade for long stretches and temperatures can be extreme.

A story
The Weiser River Trail follows the right-of-way of the Pacific & Idaho Northern Railway, which ran from Weiser north to New Meadows from 1899 until it shut down in 1995. The rails-to-trails conversion preserved a corridor that would have been lost to farmland, and the old railbed's gentle grade makes it ideal for cyclists and walkers.
