Galesburg is one of the few small American cities served by not one but two Amtrak long-distance routes. The California Zephyr and the Southwest Chief both stop at the handsome old station, making the town an unexpected gateway to transcontinental rail travel. The station building itself dates to the early 20th century and has been well maintained.
The city's railroad history runs deep — it was a major junction point for the Burlington Route (later Burlington Northern), and the National Railroad Hall of Fame has its home here, recognising Galesburg's historic role in American rail. The Hall of Fame is not yet a formal museum building but holds an archive and sponsors public events.
