Orpheum Theater

The Orpheum Theater on Kellogg Street opened in 1916 and remains one of the best-preserved early 20th-century movie palaces in downstate Illinois. The building went through the standard pattern of mid-century decline and late 20th-century rescue, and today operates as a performing arts venue hosting live music, theater, and community events.

The facade retains its original marquee and much of the decorative detail that made these atmospheric venues so distinctive. If you are passing through Galesburg on the California Zephyr and have a few hours to spare, the Orpheum is worth a look — it stands within easy walking distance of the Amtrak station.
