Lincoln the Lawyer Statue, Carle Park

Carle Park in Urbana contains a bronze statue by Lorado Taft depicting the young Abraham Lincoln as a circuit lawyer — not the bearded president of the Civil War memorials, but the lean, sharp-featured young man who practiced law across central Illinois in the 1840s. Taft was the preeminent American sculptor of his generation and an Illinois alumnus; he made several Lincoln works, and this one is among the most understated and convincing.

The park itself is a pleasant green space in a residential neighbourhood, entirely unheralded. The statue is one of the better pieces of public art in Champaign County, which is not a low bar given what the university brings to the area. Worth a detour if you are walking in that direction.

A story
Illinois called itself the Land of Lincoln before Lincoln was famous. The young Abraham Lincoln practiced law on the Eighth Judicial Circuit, which covered much of central Illinois, and he rode through Champaign County regularly in the 1840s and 1850s. He was not yet nationally known; he was just a circuit lawyer in a stovepipe hat riding between county seats. Lorado Taft's statue captures that early period rather than the presidential legend.
