City Market and the Catacombs

A working public market in a vaulted iron-and-brick hall from 1886 — one of the oldest continuously operating municipal markets in the country. The ground floor has fishmongers, butchers, a coffee roaster, and several lunch counters serving everything from soul food to gyros. The mezzanine has more food stalls and a craft bar.

The subterranean catacombs underneath, accessible by guided tour, are the city's best-kept architectural secret. Tours sell out weeks ahead in summer — book through Indiana Landmarks.

A story
Beneath the City Market lies a network of brick-vaulted passageways — the only surviving fragment of Tomlinson Hall, the city's grand 1886 auditorium that burned in 1958. Guided tours by the Indiana Landmarks organisation run on weekends and descend into the otherwise sealed catacombs, where the original cast-iron columns still stand.
