Crown Hill Cemetery and Dillinger's Grave

The fourth-largest cemetery in the United States, set on a 555-acre wooded hilltop a couple of miles north of downtown. President Benjamin Harrison, poet James Whitcomb Riley, and three vice-presidents are buried here, along with the outlaw John Dillinger — the city's most-visited grave. The Riley monument crowns the highest point in Indianapolis with a long view back across the city.

The cemetery offers guided weekend tours (Crime, Civil War, architecture, ghost), and the public is welcome to walk the grounds daily during opening hours. Pick up a map at the gatehouse on Boulevard Place; Dillinger is in section 44, lot 94.

A story
After Dillinger was shot in Chicago in 1934 his grave was repeatedly broken into by souvenir hunters. The family eventually poured a slab of cement reinforced with iron bars over the casket. His original 1934 headstone has been chipped away by visitors so many times that the current marker is the fourth.
