Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library

A small museum on Indiana Avenue dedicated to the city's most distinguished native author. Exhibits include Vonnegut's typewriter, his unsmoked Pall Malls, his rejection letters, drawings, and a copy of nearly every banned-books campaign that has tried to remove his work from a school library.

The bookstore is unusually good and the staff are devoted. Closed Tuesdays. Worth combining with a walk along the Indiana Avenue cultural district immediately west.

A story
Vonnegut moved away from Indianapolis as a young man but referred to the city in nearly every novel — most famously in *God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater* and *Breakfast of Champions*. The library holds his Purple Heart from his time as a POW in Dresden, the experience that became *Slaughterhouse-Five*.
