Shapiro's Delicatessen

A cafeteria-style Jewish deli on South Meridian Street that has been there since 1905. The pastrami and corned beef are the signature, sliced to order; the breads, including the rye, come from the in-house bakery. It is one of the oldest restaurants in the city and the south-side go-to for a quick downtown lunch.

The line moves fast even at noon. Save room for the strawberry shortcake in season.
