About 12 kilometres north of Lafayette, the Tippecanoe Battlefield marks the site where William Henry Harrison's forces defeated Tecumseh's confederacy of Native American tribes on 7 November 1811. The battle was decisive: it broke the back of pan-tribal resistance to American westward expansion in the Ohio Valley and made Harrison a national hero.
The battlefield park has a museum covering both the battle and the broader context of Tecumseh's effort to build a unified Native resistance. Walking trails take you through the field itself, with interpretive markers. The monument at the centre of the battlefield is a 40-metre obelisk built in 1908. It's an undervisited but genuinely significant piece of American history.
