The two blocks immediately around the courthouse make up the Courthouse Square Historic District, a tight cluster of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century commercial buildings, most of them in brick with cast-iron storefronts and decorative cornices. The district includes the Oren F. and Adelia Parker House, an 1880s Queen Anne residence one block off the square. Several of the original storefronts now hold antique stores, a bakery and a coffee shop; some sit vacant. The square is a workmanlike midwestern courthouse-town environment that has not been turned into a heritage attraction — which is part of its appeal.
