Earlham College was founded by Quakers in 1847 and remains one of the few colleges in the United States with an active Quaker ethos: consensus decision-making, a peace studies programme, and a commitment to non-violence that shapes the campus culture. The grounds are handsome — mature trees, red-brick buildings, and a genuine sense of calm — and visitors are welcome to walk the campus.
The college's Conner Prairie natural area borders the campus and is worth a walk. The Earlham School of Religion, a graduate seminary for Quaker ministers, is the oldest such institution associated with the Religious Society of Friends. The Richmond Art Museum sits on the campus edge and is free to visit.
