The Richmond Art Museum has an unexpectedly strong collection for a city its size, focused on American Impressionism and the Hoosier Group — a circle of Indiana painters from the 1890s who trained in Europe and returned to paint the Indiana landscape in a distinctly American Impressionist style. T.C. Steele, William Forsyth, Otto Stark, Richard Gruelle, and John Ottis Adams are all represented here.
The museum is located on the campus of Earlham College and has been operating since 1898, making it one of the older art museums in Indiana. Admission is free. The collection is modest in size but consistently well-presented, and the Hoosier Group works are genuinely worth seeing.
