South Bend Museum of Art

The South Bend Museum of Art occupies the Century Center complex on the St. Joseph River and offers a genuinely good regional collection with rotating exhibitions that pull from major institutions. The permanent holdings focus on American art from the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular strength in works by Indiana artists.

Admission is free on Sundays, making it an easy add-on to a downtown walk. The building itself is worth a look — it shares the Century Center with a convention facility and sits beside a stretch of the river that has been nicely landscaped in recent years. The museum is small enough to do thoroughly in 90 minutes.
