Sergeant Floyd Monument

National Historic Landmark obelisk marking the burial place of Lewis and Clark's only casualty.

The Sergeant Floyd Monument stands on Floyd's Bluff above the Missouri River, marking the burial place of Charles Floyd, the only member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to die during the journey. The current sandstone obelisk was completed in 1901 and later became the first National Historic Landmark in the United States.

The monument is simple, but the setting does much of the work. From the bluff you can see why the river mattered, and why this was a natural place for memory to gather.
