Lawrence's attractions cluster around the University of Kansas campus and the downtown Massachusetts Street corridor. The city's Civil War history runs deep — it was the target of two major pro-slavery attacks in the 1850s and 1860s, and several sites commemorate those events. The university museums are excellent and free.
