Nicodemus School District No. 1 Schoolhouse

The schoolhouse is the fifth of the original structures preserved within the National Historic Site. Education was a priority from the earliest days of Nicodemus — for a community of people to whom literacy had often been legally denied, building a school was an act of defiance as much as aspiration. The schoolhouse is a compact, unadorned building, and all the more moving for it.
