Chisholm Trail Museum

The Chisholm Trail Museum at 502 N. Washington is the best reason to stop in Wellington. Housed in a former hospital building across from the Sumner County Courthouse, the museum fills three floors and 40 rooms with local history — everything from Native American artefacts and Chisholm Trail cattle-drive relics to early 20th-century household items and farm equipment.

Wellington sits about seven miles off the original Chisholm Trail route, and the museum does a solid job of explaining the trail's importance to the region. Admission is free (donations welcome), and volunteers are usually happy to walk you through the highlights. Allow about an hour to see it properly. Open Tuesday through Saturday, though hours can vary — call ahead if you're making a special trip.

A story
The museum occupies the former Hatcher Hospital, a three-storey brick building from the early 1900s. When the hospital closed, locals filled its 40 rooms with artefacts rather than let the building be demolished — making it one of the most unusual museum layouts in Kansas, where you wander through former patient rooms now packed with pioneer tools, cattle-drive memorabilia, and old photographs.
