Downtown Wellington Historic District

Wellington's downtown historic district covers about 21 acres centered on Washington Avenue and the surrounding blocks. The buildings are mostly late-Victorian and early-20th-century commercial architecture — two- and three-storey brick facades with decorative cornices, arched windows, and the kind of solid construction that railroad-era prosperity paid for.

The Sumner County Courthouse anchors the north end, and you can walk the whole district in twenty minutes. Several storefronts have been restored and house small businesses, a few antique shops, and local eateries. It's not flashy, but it's a well-preserved example of a Kansas county seat that kept its original downtown fabric intact. The district earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

A story
The 21-acre district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, recognizing a collection of late-19th and early-20th-century commercial buildings that survived when many similar Kansas downtowns were demolished for parking lots and strip malls.
