Slate Creek Wetland

Slate Creek runs along the east side of Wellington and feeds into a series of wetland areas that attract birdwatchers, especially during spring and fall migration. The creek bottom and adjacent marshes draw herons, egrets, and a variety of shorebirds passing through on the Central Flyway.

There's no formal visitor center or interpretive trail — this is more of a local birding spot than a manicured nature reserve. But if you have binoculars and an hour to spare, driving the rural roads east of town along the creek can be rewarding. Southern Kansas sits right in the migration corridor, and the flat terrain makes spotting easy.
