Kentucky Downs

Kentucky Downs is the only all-turf flat thoroughbred racing track in the United States, just off Interstate 65 on the Tennessee state line south of Franklin. The course is laid out on a kidney-shaped European-style turf circuit with rolling ground and a downhill stretch — unusual for American racing and one of the reasons it draws horses and trainers from across the country.

The flat racing meet runs a handful of high-purse days each September, but the gaming side — Kentucky's first historical-racing-machine venue — operates year-round, which keeps the place busy in the off-season. Even outside meet days the track is worth a look for the unusual setting and the curiosity factor.

A story
The track was originally built in 1990 as Dueling Grounds, a nod to the fact that the site sits in a sliver of Kentucky famously used for duels and other extralegal pursuits because the state line offered convenient retreats. The all-turf course is modelled on European tracks, undulating and irregular — a contrast to the flat ovals of most American racing.
