Spring — March through May — is the classic Louisiana season: temperatures are mild, the azaleas and live oaks are at their best, and crawfish are in season from late February through May. Fall (October–November) is equally pleasant and less crowded. Summer is hot and genuinely humid; July and August can be oppressive, though the plantations are open year-round and air conditioning is universal. Mardi Gras season (January–February) brings life to the whole region, and the River Road plantations have their own Mardi Gras traditions distinct from New Orleans. Winter is mild by most standards and the least busy time to visit.
