Masur Museum of Art

The largest visual arts museum in northeast Louisiana, free admission

Address 1400 S Grand St, Monroe, LA

The Masur Museum of Art is housed in a 1931 Tudor Revival building on South Grand Street, a residential boulevard lined with old oaks and notable homes. It is the primary fine arts institution in northeast Louisiana, with a permanent collection that spans American painting, prints, photography, and decorative arts, and a rotating programme of temporary exhibitions that brings in regional and national shows.

Admission is free, which is the norm for civic museums in smaller American cities and one reason the Masur is worth a stop even for visitors who might otherwise skip a museum on a short trip. The building itself is architecturally interesting, and the surrounding neighbourhood — one of Monroe's more intact historic residential areas — is pleasant to walk.
