R.W. Norton Art Gallery

The Norton is the best art museum in north Louisiana and one of the best in the state. The collection runs from European old masters and Wedgwood porcelain to a major holding of American Western art — Frederic Remington and Charles Russell are both well represented, with bronzes and paintings on permanent display. The gun and edged-weapon collection is unexpectedly serious.

Admission is free. The building sits in a quiet residential neighbourhood south of downtown, with mature pine and oak shading the parking. Allow at least two hours, more in spring when the gardens are out.

A story
The forty-acre grounds around the gallery are an azalea botanical garden — when they bloom in late March and early April, the landscape turns electric pink and white, and the gardens alone draw visitors who never make it inside the museum.
