Bar Island

A small wooded island just off downtown Bar Harbor, reachable on foot across a tidal gravel bar at low tide. The crossing itself is the attraction: bare ocean floor underfoot, mussel shells crunching, a low fog drifting in. On the island, a short trail climbs to an open ledge with the best view back at the town and the surrounding peaks of Acadia.

Check the tide chart before you go. The bar is walkable for roughly three hours total — about ninety minutes either side of low tide. The trailhead is at the north end of Bridge Street.

A story
The gravel bar that connects the island to the mainland is exposed for only about 90 minutes either side of low tide. Tourists who misjudge it have to wade — or wait six hours for the next window — and the local fire department fields a few rescues every summer.
