Jesup Memorial Library

A 1911 Beaux Arts library on Mount Desert Street, built with money from Maria DeWitt Jesup in memory of her husband Morris, a New York philanthropist who summered here. The building is small but handsome — granite, columns, a high reading room — and one of the few civic buildings in town to survive the 1947 fire.

Open to walk-ins. The local history collection upstairs is useful if you want to know what Bar Harbor looked like before half of it burned down.
