Bridgton Twin Drive-In

The Bridgton Twin Drive-In, on Route 302 just north of downtown, is one of the few remaining drive-in theaters in New England and reason enough to plan a warm-weather visit around a summer Friday night. The setup is classic: two screens, a FM radio broadcast for the audio, and a snack bar serving popcorn and hot dogs. First-run double features run nightly from late spring through Labor Day.

Drive-ins require a car, obviously, and this one rewards an early arrival — the lot fills up on weekend evenings in July and August. Bring blankets; even summer nights in western Maine can be cool after dark. The experience has a nostalgic quality that holds up even if you've seen the movie before.

A story
The Bridgton Twin Drive-In is one of a handful of surviving drive-ins in New England, a region that once had hundreds. Most closed in the 1970s and 1980s as land values rose and home video arrived. Bridgton's has survived in part because the surrounding land is not particularly valuable for development.
