Bridgton sits in the heart of western Maine's lakes and mountains region, roughly equidistant from Portland, Freeport, and North Conway, New Hampshire. It is a genuine four-season town: swimming and canoeing on Long Lake and Highland Lake in summer, spectacular foliage drives in fall, and skiing at Pleasant Mountain and snowmobiling on a vast trail network in winter. The surrounding lakes and clean mountain air have drawn families here for generations, and the town still has the feel of old-fashioned New England summer vacations.
Downtown Bridgton is small but has a good cluster of shops and restaurants along Main Street. The Bridgton Twin Drive-In is one of the few remaining drive-in theaters in New England and is worth a visit on a warm summer night. The Magic Lantern Cinema, a four-screen movie house with old-fashioned balconies and a pub inside, is a pleasure in any weather. The town also has a farmers market that runs through the warmer months.
The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity is the best surprise in town — a small museum dedicated to a western Maine native who founded Scientific American, painted murals across New England, invented the revolving rifle (and sold the patent to Colt for $100), and lived to 92. It alone is worth the detour for anyone interested in American folk art or the history of invention.
If you are based here, Long Lake stretches north from town and is good for kayaking, fishing, and swimming. Pleasant Mountain rises to the west and offers hiking trails with views across the lakes region all the way to Mount Washington on a clear day. Bridgton is also well positioned as a base for day trips to the coast or the White Mountains — both are about an hour's drive.
