At the triangular junction where Court Street meets US Route 1 stand two austere Greek Revival buildings dating from the 1830s — the original Hancock County courthouse and jail. They are no longer in official use, but the granite-and-brick architecture is among the best preserved of its era in eastern Maine.
You cannot usually go inside, but the exterior is worth a five-minute stop, especially in combination with a stroll through the rest of historic downtown.
