Kennebec River Levee

A paved levee path runs along the Kennebec River below Water Street, separating the town from the water. It is a pleasant short walk, particularly in the evening when the light off the river turns golden and the boats on the water are quiet. Benches are placed at intervals with views across to the undeveloped eastern bank.

The levee was built after serious flooding in the 20th century and has the utilitarian look of flood control infrastructure, but the views are genuinely good and the path sees steady use from locals. In spring, the river ice breaking up is a local event worth seeing if you happen to be in town.
