Hallowell's pleasures are quiet ones: walking the historic main street, browsing antique shops, and watching the Kennebec River from the levee. The town is compact and best explored on foot. The Hallowell Historic District encompasses the old commercial core, and the Hubbard Free Library is a handsome Carnegie-era building worth a look.
