College Park

Maryland university city with aviation history beside Washington D.C.'s Metro corridor.

College Park is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, sitting just outside Washington D.C. along the metro line. It is best known as the home of the University of Maryland, whose large campus dominates the northern part of the city and drives much of the local economy and culture.

The city has a genuine place in aviation history: the College Park Airport, established in 1909, is the world's oldest continuously operating airport. Wilbur Wright trained the first military pilots here. The College Park Aviation Museum on the airport grounds tells this story with a strong collection of historic aircraft and exhibits, open daily from 10am to 5pm (admission: $4 adults, $2 children).

College Park is an easy Metro ride from central Washington, making it a practical base for visiting the capital's museums and monuments while paying suburban rather than D.C. prices.
