Monocacy National Battlefield

Rural Civil War battlefield where a delaying fight helped protect Washington in 1864.

Monocacy National Battlefield preserves the fields and farm lanes of the July 1864 fight often called the battle that saved Washington. Union forces lost here, but the delay slowed Jubal Early's Confederate advance enough for reinforcements to reach the capital.

The landscape still feels rural despite being close to highways and suburbs. Stop at the visitor center first, then follow the driving route and short walking trails across the farm sites.
