Frederick

Maryland market city with a walkable historic core and strong Civil War sites.

Frederick is one of Maryland's most rewarding inland towns, close enough to Washington, DC, and Baltimore for an easy day trip but with a character of its own. Its old center has brick storefronts, church spires, antique shops, galleries, and a creek walk that makes the city feel more like a real place than a preserved historic district.

History is the main reason to come. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine is unusually specific and better than its niche sounds, while Monocacy National Battlefield sits just south of town on open fields where an 1864 battle delayed a Confederate move toward Washington.

Frederick also works as a slow wandering stop. Walk Carroll Creek Park, browse Market Street, and leave time for the German colonial stonework at Schifferstadt. The city is not grand, but it has enough good anchors and enough street life to justify a spare day.
