Getting There

Amherst is easiest to reach by Peter Pan or Greyhound bus from Boston, New York, or Hartford. From Boston, the express bus takes about two hours and drops you in central Amherst at the bus stop near the town common; fares are usually around USD 30–45 one way.

By train, Amtrak's Vermonter stops at Amherst station, a short walk from the centre, with one daily service in each direction between Washington DC and St. Albans, Vermont. The nearest larger Amtrak station is Springfield, with frequent connections to Boston, New York, and points south.

By car, Amherst is about two hours west of Boston on the I-90 (Mass Pike) and Route 9, or three hours north of New York City on I-91. Parking in the centre is metered; longer-stay lots are signed off the main streets.
