Lowell is about 30 miles northwest of Boston and is easily reached by commuter rail on the MBTA Lowell Line from North Station. Trains run roughly every hour and the journey takes about 50 minutes; this is the most practical option from Boston. Lowell station is a five-minute walk from the national historical park visitor centre.
By car, Lowell is on Route 3 and I-495. Parking is available near the national park and in several downtown garages; the city is not difficult to drive to or navigate. From Boston, the drive takes 45–60 minutes depending on traffic.
There is no direct airport service to Lowell. The nearest major airport is Logan International in Boston (about 35 miles via I-93 and I-495); Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in New Hampshire is about 30 miles north and occasionally offers cheaper fares.
