Owl Diner

Classic 1950s-era stainless-steel diner serving big breakfasts and traditional New England fare since 1958

The Owl Diner (formerly the Monarch Diner) is one of Lowell's oldest and most beloved restaurants, housed in a classic stainless-steel diner car on Appleton Street. The interior is pure mid-century Americana: counter stools, red vinyl booths, pie under a glass dome, and waitstaff who call you "hon." It has been serving breakfast and lunch continuously since 1958.

The food is straightforward and satisfying. The breakfast plate — eggs, bacon or sausage, toast, home fries, coffee — is the right choice. They also do solid New England lunch staples: clam chowder, tuna melts, and substantial club sandwiches. Prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is genuinely welcoming. Cash only; it fills up on weekend mornings, so arrive early or expect a short wait.
