A short walk along the harbour from Edgartown's main shopping street brings you to the small cast-iron lighthouse that marks the entrance to the inner harbour. The current tower was built in 1881 in Crane Beach, Ipswich, and floated by barge to Edgartown in 1939 to replace an older wooden lighthouse.
In summer the lighthouse is open for climbs; the top gives a view across to Chappaquiddick. The lawn around the base is laid out as a children's memorial — paving stones engraved with the names of children who have died — and is a quietly moving spot.
